Why can't we purchase an all electric car at a reasonable price?

Electric vehicles would solve many of the problems that plague us today, including green house gases, acid rain and wars over oil. I am aware that electric vehicles also contribute to these things, but to a much lesser extent than fossil fuel based vehicles. I think that it has something to do with the stranglehold that oil companies have on the EV market.

Are we really thinking the electric car scenario through, aren't we missing some other key points of contention? You know, such as what to do with 100 million discarded batteries in the next 10-years in our landfills? We are already complaining about cell phone and laptop batteries in our dumps, what about 30 batteries per car filled with lithium, which is considered a metal, and it is a neurotoxin too.

Check with the EPA online, and see for yourself.

Did you know when an electric car gets in a wreck and the batteries are ruptured they have to call out a hazmat team. Did you know nickel metal hydride batteries are a severe environmental problem because they contain heavy metal? Did you know even if your regular car gets in a wreck, and the battery starts leaking that is a serious issue; this is because there is sulfuric acid inside the batteries, no, it's not a huge deal but to authorities it is. Ion-lithium batteries are also quite bad for the environment.

So what happens if someone buys one of these $110,000 Tesla sports cars and cannot handle the 3.5 seconds to 60 mph acceleration, and duly crashes their car into something like an immovable object? I guess they'll have to call up a hazmat team, so much for helping the environment. But if you happen to live in the State of Colorado, they are giving a $42,000 tax credit if you buy a Tesla electric car.

Thus, we can expect to see lots electric cars in Colorado, and when the roads get into icy conditions they are sure going to keep the hazmat teams busy aren't they? Please consider all this.

With all the current emphasis on going "green" and protecting the environment, it is no wonder that the electric car has come center focus. Especially now with soaring gas prices, consumers want to know their options. Traditional gas powered vehicles have long been the focus of those concerned with environmental issues, and so invariably inventors and car manufacturers look to improve the technologies available on the electric car.

If you are considering the purchase of an electric car, you need to be realistic about their benefits. They've come a long way recently but they still have some significant disadvantages, and there are still limitations to their use and wide spread availability. Here are some disadvantages you may want to consider when evaluating if an electric car is feasible for your transportation needs:

1. Electric cars are expensive to own. If you've checked into the price of an electric car, you know they are not "low end". It's not so much the price of the car as it is the price of the batteries which they run on. If you've purchased batteries you know how the costs can add up quickly, and the batteries used in electric cars are lithium-ion, which are expensive. Also keep in mind that eventually the battery packs will need to be replaced, as they have a life of approximately 3 to 4 years.

2. The batteries will need to be recharged. A second disadvantage to an electric car is that the batteries will need to be recharged. This will require advanced planning because you'll have to allow adequate time for the batteries to be fully charged. Now this might not sound like that big of a problem but if you are thinking of purchasing an electric car then you will need to make an honest assessment of how much you will use your vehicle. An extended or unplanned trip could be problematic if you haven't had time to fully recharge the batteries.

3. Limits on driving distance. If you drive long distances, an electric car might not suit your needs, so you will need to consider how far you plan on driving your car. Most of the electric cars have limits on how many miles they can go before needing a recharge. Electric car maker ZAP recently announced that their electric car could travel up to 100 miles per single charge, but many people drive more miles than that round trip on a daily commute to work. This is definitely a limitation for those who intend to use the vehicle for getting to and from their place of employment. You certainly would not want to run out of batteries if you got stuck in a rush hour traffic jam.

4. Lack of power. Another disadvantage to the electric car is the lack of power, specifically quick pickup. If you do a lot of interstate driving there are going to be times when you will need to accelerate quickly to merge into traffic.

Electric cars have come a long way in recent years but still have to overcome a few more obstacles before becoming widely embraced as a solution for many consumers.

You can use almost any vehicle for your EV Conversion, but there are a couple of factors to consider when you are making your choice for a vehicle to use in a electric vehicle conversion.

The first consideration is whether the vehicle you wish to use has the capacity to carry the batteries which you need to drive your electric vehicle. There are two factors to consider here.

Firstly will the vehicle's suspension be able to carry the weight of the batteries which you need to drive your vehicle. This situation can be worked around with the use of a different type of battery, however this is going to depend largely on your budget, as batteries with a higher energy density will almost certainly cost more. There are ways around that problem too though! The second issue is the problem of whether the batteries will fit into the space which you have available. In order to get the range and acceleration which you require from your electric vehicle, you will generally need about 20 12 volt lead acid batteries, there must be adequate space within the vehicle to store these batteries safely.

For the above reasons, light trucks are often the best choice for an electric vehicle conversion although strong light sedans can also be very successfully converted.

Secondly, you need to consider whether the vehicles braking system will be able to handle the additional weight added by the weight of the batteries. This is an important consideration as your safety and that of your family could be at stake if the brakes fail at a crucial time. The first thing to do to is to calculate the net weight difference once you have placed your battery set in your vehicle. To do this you need to know how many batteries you are using and what each one weighs, the supplier will be able to give you an average weight. When you know what the batteries and the motor weigh in total you can subtract the weight of all the old gas components from this weight to get a net weight, remember to add weight for a full tank of gas and with the radiator full. When you subtract the gas vehicle component's weight from the motor and battery's weight you have the net weight increase and can then determine what effect the additional weight will have on the braking system. If the additional weight is substantial, possibly over 500 pounds, then it may be advisable to consult a brake specialist in order to ensure that your brakes function properly when you need them to!

Two important considerations when putting together your electric vehicle conversion, the suspension capacity and the braking system. These two systems determine the comfort of your EV ride and the safety with which you can take that ride.

Two of the most important factors to consider when you convert your car to electric, the suspension and the brakes, could be potentially life threatening if not handled correctly. Go to http://www.electricvehiclesolution.com to learn more about these important factors and many others to ensure that your conversion is a great success.

Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid, Electric - Which Is Best?

So you want an economical, low emission car, but with new technologies appearing all the time, do you choose petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric... or something else...?

Vehicles emit carbon dioxide (CO2), the major cause of climate change. They also produce other emissions that impact on the quality of local air (the air that we breathe). New cleaner green vehicles are coming onto the market all the time, so we can do our bit by choosing lower-emission vehicles. This also saves us money on running costs. But how do you know which technology to choose? This is a quick guide to help you decide what’s best for you.

Petrol and diesel models

The Toyota Aygo manages to be a cheap, fun and economical city car with a petrol engine that manages 62.8mpg and emits just 106g/km CO2

Most vehicles still have conventional petrol or diesel engines. But, the good news is that they are becoming increasingly fuel efficient. Better efficiency means fewer emissions.

Petrol engines are generally favoured for smaller city-type cars, as they are lighter, more responsive for urban driving and cheaper to manufacture.

Diesel engines are more economical than petrol engines, especially for longer journeys, which means they also have lower CO2 emissions. The downside is that diesel engines can emit particulates that harm local air quality more than petrol engine emissions. The emissions are reduced if the vehicle has a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

Green models

BlueMotion is Volkswagen's super-efficient range, the new UK-spec Polo BlueMotion can manage 83.1mpg and emits just 90g/km CO2

Many car manufacturers offer green versions of their conventional models. These are more fuel efficient and so have lower emissions. Certain common technologies are used to achieve such fuel savings. These include better aerodynamics, reduced weight, lower-resistance tyres, lower gearing, remapped engine management systems, stop-start systems and less load on the engine from ancillary items.

Green models often have a price premium. This means you must work out if your mileage will give large enough savings to pay back the extra investment. At least one manufacturer is applying efficient technologies to all its vehicles.

Hybrid mod
1000
els

The latest Toyota Prius hybrid emits just 89g/km CO2 and can achieve 72.4mpg - amazing figures for a five seat hatchback

A hybrid vehicle has a conventional engine and a battery-powered electric motor. The idea is that the engine is used most of the time, but in most hybrids the electric motor alone can provide power at low speeds. In urban use, this means a hybrid car should offer reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. At higher speeds, the engine and the electric motor may work together to provide more power.

At the moment, only petrol-electric hybrids are available in the UK. Diesel hybrids are due soon. Although hybrid vehicles can offer lower emissions in towns and cities, they can still be driven for long distances thanks to the petrol engine. Hybrid cars are generally more expensive than comparable non-hybrid ones.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles will be here soon. You plug these into an electricity supply to recharge the electric motor's battery, which means higher electric power capacity and therefore lower exhaust emissions.

Electric vehicles

The Mitsubishi i MiEV is an all-electric vehicle that's excellent to drive, exists now, and is due to be available in the UK before the end of 2010

We are at the start of an electric revolution. There are currently only a few electric vehicles to buy today. This will change soon, as many manufacturers are planning to bring new electric vehicles to the marketplace.

Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions. If they are recharged using electricity from renewable sources, they are potentially the lowest emission vehicles you could use. The problems are the limited range before they need recharging and their relatively low top speeds. Nonetheless, they are ideal for short journeys in urban environments, where the number of recharging facilities is expanding.

Although you can buy electric cars, vans and scooters, the choice is limited. Electric cars with the latest technology can be expensive, but their running costs are very low.

Biofuels

Saab saw biofuels as having real potential and brought vehicles such as the 9-5 BioPower to market, but sufficient financial incentives for biofuels currently don't exist in the UK

Some vehicles available in the UK can be powered by biofuels. Biofuels are renewable; they can be produced from plant material or waste vegetable oil, for example.

Some petrol engines can be adjusted to run on bioethanol or blends containing a high proportion of bioethanol. Bioethanol fuel is only available at a few fuel stations. Some diesel engines can run on biodiesel or biodiesel blends, but these fuels too have limited availability.

Check the sustainability credentials of all biofuels. The most sustainable are those made from waste or non- food crops. The biofuels currently being developed from sources such algae promise to be the most sustainable.

Gas

There aren't many vehicles around that are powered by gas but this Volkswagen Caddy van is one of them, and it's greener than most as it runs on biogas

Gas, such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or compressed natural gas (CNG), can power some vehicles.

Vehicles that can run on LPG are usually dual-fuel conversions, i.e., they also run on petrol. LPG is a slightly cleaner fuel than petrol, and it is certainly cheaper. CNG is used primarily for heavier commercial-type vehicles.

Biomethane is renewable bio-gas derived from sources such as landfill sites, so it’s very sustainable but unfortunately is not widely available.

Hydrogen

Honda is the first manufacturer to produce a car powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, the FCX Clarity, which is currently on the road in America and Japan, albeit it in limited numbers

Hydrogen is the ultimate future fuel, as its only emission is water. Some manufacturers are either producing or trialling c
1000
ars powered by hydrogen, but they must overcome some challenges before we can all drive around in hydrogen-powered vehicles. These challenges include the lack of a hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, the expense of making hydrogen-powered vehicles and producing hydrogen sustainably.

Summary

While some manufacturers are offering greener variants of some of their models, BMW has applied its EfficientDynamics technologies throughout its model range, with the aim of ensuring all of its cars are still great to drive while being class-leading in terms of low emissions

Zero-exhaust-emission vehicles are the ideal for urban areas. Electric vehicles achieve this. They are available, and the choice will increase with time.

If you need a longer range than an electric vehicle offers, a hybrid vehicle may be the answer, and it helps to reduce emissions from urban driving.

If electric or hybrid vehicles are impractical, choose a vehicle that has best-in-class efficiency. And if new vehicles are too expensive, remember, second-hand green vehicles are also available.
