Why can't we purchase an all electric car at a reasonable price?

Electric vehicles would solve many of the problems that plague us today, including green house gases, acid rain and wars over oil. I am aware that electric vehicles also contribute to these things, but to a much lesser extent than fossil fuel based vehicles. I think that it has something to do with the stranglehold that oil companies have on the EV market.
